York entrepreneur tackles food waste

Taken from here.

York Biolochemistry graduate Kenneth Cheung is receiving media coverage for his social enterprise, BEEcycle Ltd, and its range of products and services, which make it easier to recycle food waste.

Kenneth founded BEEcycle after graduating from the University of York, where he showed a keen interest in enterprise. The company produces a range of high-tech products to help people compost and recycle food waste, including the OvO—a self-watering plant pot which produces its own compost naturally! BEEcycle also engages businesses and the community through a recycling education programme.

Very clever. I don’t know how some people would feel about a self-composting plant pot in their home, but I don’t think it’s too wacky to work. Here is BEEcycle’s company description from their website:

BEEcycle
Products and Services to help recycle your food waste

Recycling is no longer just a trend. It is now part of life. Fortnightly collection, waste separation and food waste collection schemes are being adopted all across the UK. Our company is here to provide education and solutions for households, schools and businesses with their food waste. We also provide information on new emerging technologies and products across the world which can be adopted to divert food waste from landfill.

6.7 million tonnes of food waste is thrown away each year in the UK, and when put in landfill they produce not just carbon dioxide, but methane as well which is 23 times more potent a greenhouse gas. So we need to recycle our food and do something good for our planet – and we will help you do it effortlessly and innovatively.
